During this first week, we will look at various virtual environments which allow for real-time conversations such as Sinespace, HiFidelity, Sansar (Draxtor), VR Chat etc. Participants with experience in various virtual worlds are invited to tour us around and showcase them using the screen sharing feature of Zoom.
With 4 Mill users and some 30% of them using HMDs, VR Chat is rightly called the most popular VR spaces todate. It is played by some 50.000 communities and it is an MMORG - a massive multi player online roleplaying game. It can be played with or without headset (HMD). A social VR hub filled with people who have fun. VR Chat is free and comes with a number of cool features like avatar cloning, voice over IP, thousands of community spaces and always someone to talk to. PC controls are somewhat different to what we are used to and this needs a little explaining. VR Chat can be entered with a PC and with the Occulus Quest.
Live Session in VR Chat on Saturday, 18 January 2020 at 8pm GMT/ 12pm noon SLTime
Created by Ebbe Altberg, CTO of Linden Lab. Linden Lab owns Second Life. Sansar is VR enabled and runs on a PC too. It is not very intuitiv to build in Sansar but it sure is a cool looking place.
A virtual world based on the Unity engine from the founders of OpenSim Adam Frisby. Adam was also one of the core team developers when Second Life started. Lots of virtual games and virtual worlds are based on Unity and mostly this means that one can not build. It is interactive alright but one can not be creative. Adam Frisby and his team however added a 'SineSpace' layer to it which allows for moving objects and even co-editing objects. On top of that, they created a plug-in for Unity which allows for importing oar files, which are files from OpenSim. Whilst still in public beta, SineSpace is one of the most promising 'kids on the block'.
Altspace
Some also call it Oldspace because the grafics aren't very appealing. A 3D world run by Microsoft. Even though many believed this world to die soon, it is still alive and kicking with many users worldwide. Altspace runs on any device, even mobile phones. No HMD is required.
Facebook Spaces/ Facebook Horizon
Facebook Spaces can only be accessed using the Occulus Rift. Facebook Horizon is said to be the new virtual 3D world coming up from Facebook.
Immerse Online is a feature rich 3D VR enabled language learning solution filled with scenarios and language content for English language training. The start-up Immerse Online went public in May 2019 so what Lukas Palecek is showcasing to us is brand new. It is expensive, almost unaffordable for private language teachers and is something language schools may want to buy in. However, what interests us is what was created and how interaction is being carried out in this environment. To attend a learner, you need to have an Occulus Go, no other device works except for the teacher interface which can be accessed via a laptop. Lukas will show us the teacher interface and has someone act as a student at hand to show how language learning could work there.
Learn English in a safe and immersive environment while having fun using Virtual Reality. Talk to our virtual characters and improve your fluency in english.
