Immersive game-play is a social phenomena and virtual and real worlds are merging. This EVO session focused on applying games in virtual teaching – using ideas from f2f (face to face) and transferring them to virtual language learning. We aim to create new games in virtual worlds using the affordances these immersive environments have to offer and are making machinima (videos) to demonstrate how the games work.

During the project we met twice a week and learned to build, texture and script games for fun in language learning.

See interviews with two of the participants:

We covered:

This project was aimed at experienced language educators, language course designers, and webheads.  Those without experience in Second Life were required to independently learn the basics of Second Life by watching a set of videos and conducting some simple tasks in-world.

In week 1 we made a simple board game, dice and game pieces to move around.

At the end of the first week, we all presented our first board games to the group and explained how the games work.

In week 2 we started simple building with sounds and scripts

making speaking poster boards, sound objects, touch items and touch to give notecards, landmarks and scripts.

Week 3 got far more exciting with treasure hunts, scavenger hunts and maizes.

We made the city or the woods our playground with scavenger hunts everywhere!

During week 4 we started to learn some advanced building skills learning how to adjust our objects settings for permissions and physics, covering more about texturing and importing 3D objects into SL.

In week 5 we looked at Language Learning Activities, interactive Games, immersive Scenarios and more, using holodecks to create simulations, and emoting story telling.

A great time was had by all. lots of games where produced and shared.
